"Take Five is a simple dining concept: Every dish on the menu is $5. Not $4.50, not $4.95, not $5.05. Five bucks, period. Experienced restaurateurs Joe and Charlie Carlucci have put together a dining concept that is brilliant. You have to wonder why somebody didn't think of this before. "And those $5 dishes are nothing to sneer at. This is not fast food. This is not the kind of food that fills up your stomach yet leaves a void in your brain ("Did I just eat, and if I did, what was it?). This is real food. More than once, as I plowed through one dish after another, I was trying to figure out how they could put out food this good at this price and still pay the rent. "The Take Five menu does not skimp on choices. By actual count there are 35 dishes (not counting side fries and sides) from which to chose. "The atmosphere is brassy and fun. Tables are mostly high tops, but there are booths if that seating is better for you. Active bar scene. Outdoor dining. Broad selection of wine and beers. Good for children (choices galore)." Pat Bruno, Chicago Sun-Times "The concept of a single-price menu is unusual... some ultra-high-end establishments have featured one-price menus or prix-fixe meals in a few price tiers." Nation's Restaurant News "Aimed at pleasing any palate, this wide-ranging menu also aims to please anyone's account: Everything - yes, even the veal - is $5. "The portions are generous, but not enormous. Waiters abound, and are friendly and professional. A hostess will seat you at one of the tall tables, or if you're lucky, at one of the intimate booths along the wall. On both visits our food arrived promptly and hot. "The bar type food is worth the $5 you'll pay for it. The meatball wedge comes with three tasty meatballs in a zesty marinara sauce on a soft sub roll with just enough cheese to make it decadent but not gooey. The cheese fries were plentiful, crispy but not greasy and blanketed with tangy melted cheese. And the dense, moist and extravagantly rich chocolate cake is brilliant, well worth the money. Worth $6 even." Trine Tsouderos, Chicago Tribune |
